The fact is the unit.
We collect the facts, disclose every source, and then say what we think. In that order, and in the open. Where we stand →
Five states
EVERY FACT CARRIES ONE- EstablishedEstablished
Two or more independent sources agree, and no source disputes it.
- SupportedSupported
A source says so, with a page a reader can check. Nothing against it yet.
- DocumentedDocumented
One source, or a source whose method is thin. We show it and say so.
- ContestedContested
Sources disagree. Every named position is shown side by side, with its source disclosed.
- UnknownUnknown
No source entered yet. The default for every event until one is.
Every source, disclosed 来源公开
You judge the source.
We do not score historians. We choose the sources, and for each one we show what you need to judge it yourself. The Party's own documents are marked as what the Party said.
- 1Who they are, and where they work
- 2What the work rests on: archives, documents, interviews
- 3Who employs and funds them, and the bodies they appear with
- 4The published criticism of the work, by name
- 5A link to the work, and the day we read it
The rules
WE KEEP THEM WHERE YOU CAN CHECK THEM- The fact is the unitAn event is a date and a title. What we can show about it is a fact, and each fact carries one of the five states.
- Nothing generatedNo generated photographs, documents, maps or quotes. An image appears only once its rights are cleared, item by item.
- No unsourced countersNo death counter without its source. A contested number is never drawn as settled.
- Missing is not zeroA gap in the data is drawn as a gap. A decade with nothing logged shows nothing, not a flat line.
- Shape before colourEvery lane has its own mark and every state is written in words, so meaning never rests on colour alone.
- Disclosed, not scoredWe choose our sources and we do not score them. Each one is disclosed: who they are, what the work rests on, who employs and funds them, and the published criticism of it, so you can judge.
- The database refusesA fact above unknown cannot be saved without a link a reader can open. The rule lives in the database, not in our good intentions.
证EvidenceEvery event links to its sources, with a page and an archived copy.
源DisclosureEvery source is shown with who it is and what it rests on. You judge it.
判JudgmentThen we judge, and we write down why.
