Kept out of public record for years. Figures contested.

American and Chinese table tennis players photographed in Beijing in April 1971 during the diplomatic thaw that preceded Resolution 2758 at the United Nations.
Following the 1969 Sino-Soviet border clashes on the Ussuri River, Beijing moved to break its diplomatic isolation, welcoming the U.S. table tennis delegation in April 1971, receiving Henry Kissinger secretly in July, and taking the China seat at the United Nations on 25 October 1971.

01待考证: a source that says this: Meisner and Wemheuer do not (Google Books search inside, 2026-10-09). The line was: In early August 1975, Typhoon Nina stalled over the upper reaches of the Huai River basin, dropping over 1,600 millimetres of rain within three days and quickly exceeding the total design capacities of the regional reservoir networks.
待考02待考证: a source that says this: Meisner and Wemheuer do not (Google Books search inside, 2026-10-09). The line was: Built during the Great Leap Forward under the politically driven doctrine of 'storing water above all', the dams had expanded reservoir capacities while drastically reducing spillways, ignoring early warnings from hydrologist Chen Xing who was purged as a rightist.
待考03待考证: a source that says this: Meisner and Wemheuer do not (Google Books search inside, 2026-10-09). The line was: Around 1:00 am on 8 August, the earthen dam at Banqiao breached, sending an eight-metre crest of seven hundred million cubic metres of water rushing downstream at nearly fifty kilometres per hour, annihilating entire townships in their sleep.
见载06待考证: a source that says this: Meisner and Wemheuer do not (Google Books search inside, 2026-10-09). The line was: The catastrophe was immediately classified as a top state secret, kept out of textbooks and public awareness for decades, while subsequent internal investigations estimated total deaths between 85,000 and 230,000.
